Efficiency

I'm sure you guys are all the same as me: you watch the UFC because it's exciting as hell, yet you're constantly finding yourself getting pissed off at what a lot of the fighters are doing--or not doing.

There are two schools of thought, though, on efficiency. One is that you should be able to last as long as it takes--go the distance. Boxers are guilty of this, and they dance their candy asses all around the ring trying to rack up the points for the decision. The same is true of MMA fighters, though, in their ground game. They say things like, "it's a chess game, a game of strategy," and the hallmark of a great grappler becomes how long he can "roll" and fend off submissions, change positions to his advantage, etc.

I disagree with this strategy. While efficiency is something I believe you should strive to excel at, it's a different kind of efficiency I'm thinking of. I'm talking about economy of motion, not wasting moves, etc. While I think it's important to be able to go the distance, it shouldn't be your goal. To me, that is a waste. To me, the ideal fighter is one who strikes when it is a sure thing, with precision and power. No tap-tap-tapping. No fiddle farting around.

The same applies to grappling. If you're going to the ground, you need to be focused on ending the fight. That's the goal right? Never leave anything up to the judges. They will screw you.
